Word Descrambler

Enter a rack of mixed-up letters to find words you can build from it. The default search includes shorter words, so you can make use of every useful combination instead of seeing only full anagrams.

Find words from your letters

Enter 2–15 letters. Use ? for a blank or unknown tile.

Spaces are ignored. Use no more than two ? wildcards.

Enter 2–15 letters and select Find Words.

Results are checked against the local ENABLE1 public-domain reference list. A listed word is not guaranteed to be accepted by a particular game.

How to descramble a set of letters

A word descrambler tests possible words against a dictionary instead of asking you to spot each rearrangement yourself. Put the available letters in the box, then decide whether you want every tile used or whether shorter words are useful too.

  1. Enter your letter rack. Type the letters in any order. Up to two question marks can represent blank tiles.
  2. Choose a word-length range. Keep shorter words in the results or raise the minimum length to focus on longer plays.
  3. Add a pattern when you have one. Use starts-with, ends-with or contains to narrow the candidates.
  4. Compare the results. The longest matching words appear first by default. Switch to A–Z sorting when you want to scan alphabetically.

Descrambler or anagram solver?

A full anagram rearranges every available letter. A descrambler can also find shorter words that use only part of the rack. That distinction is useful when a board or word game lets you play with fewer tiles than you hold.

For full rearrangements only, open the Anagram Solver. For a multi-word newspaper-style puzzle with circled-letter extraction, use Jumbled Words.

About the reference word list

This tool uses ENABLE1, a public-domain English reference list. Game publishers maintain their own word lists, so use the results as a word-finding aid rather than a guarantee of acceptance in Scrabble, Words With Friends or another game.

Word descrambler questions

What does a word descrambler do?

It checks a group of letters against a word list and returns words that can be made from those tiles. By default, a result can use fewer than all of your letters.

Does every result have to use all my letters?

No. The default search finds shorter words as well as full-length words. Select “Use every tile” when you only want complete anagrams.

Can I use blank tiles?

Yes. Enter up to two question marks. Each question mark can stand for one missing letter.

Can I narrow the word list?

Yes. Set a minimum and maximum word length, or add optional starts-with, ends-with and contains filters.

Which dictionary does this tool use?

It searches the public-domain ENABLE1 reference list bundled with this site. It is not an official Scrabble, Words With Friends or other game dictionary.
