What is an anagram?

An anagram is a word formed by rearranging the letters of another word or set of letters. A full anagram uses every letter exactly once. For example, LISTEN and SILENT contain the same six letters in a different order.

How to use the anagram solver

  1. Enter your letters. Type between two and fifteen letters. The solver ignores spaces.
  2. Add a wildcard if needed. A question mark represents one unknown letter. Up to two wildcards are supported.
  3. Choose full anagrams or shorter words. Keep “Use every letter” selected for complete rearrangements, or turn it off to find words made from a subset.
  4. Narrow the results. Choose a word-length range and optionally set the first letters, last letters or a required sequence.

Why a blank tile can change the results

A wildcard can stand for any one letter. The solver tries substitutions against the local word list while still respecting the letters you entered. It does not multiply one wildcard into several letters, and repeated letters still need enough matching tiles or wildcards.

About the word list

The solver uses ENABLE1, a public-domain English reference list compiled by Alan Beale and M. Cooper. It is suitable for general word exploration, but it is not a guaranteed match for a Scrabble, Words With Friends or other game's official lexicon.

For five-letter pattern clues, use the five-letter word finder. To search Words With Friends rack tiles with its tile values, use the Words With Friends cheat tool.

Anagram solver questions

How many letters can I enter?

Enter between 2 and 15 letters. Spaces are ignored, and you can use up to two question marks as blank or unknown letters.

Does the solver use every letter?

Yes by default. Turn off “Use every letter” to include shorter words that can be made from a subset of your letters.

What does the question mark do?

Each question mark can stand for one letter A to Z. The solver checks possible substitutions against the local reference word list.

Which dictionary does the anagram solver use?

It searches the public-domain ENABLE1 reference word list bundled with this site. It is not an official dictionary for Scrabble, Words With Friends or another specific game.

Can I search for a word pattern?

Yes. Add optional starts-with, ends-with or contains filters, and narrow the length range before searching.
